The short answer
UK stablecoin tax changes planned for April 2027: eligible disposals, savings income, company treatment, transition rules and what remains subject to legislation.
The UK government has announced a planned reform to treat eligible stablecoins more like money for tax purposes from April 2027. The published policy would exempt eligible stablecoin disposals from Capital Gains Tax for individuals and trustees, treat certain interest-like returns as savings income, and use accounts-based treatment for certain company transactions.
This is currently a Finance Bill 2026–27 policy and draft-legislation topic, not a licence to rewrite every stablecoin transaction as tax-free today. The exact definition of an eligible stablecoin, commencement provisions, transition rules and final legislation must be checked before filing. For the current rules, use the existing Cryptoasset Tax UK 2026/27 guide.
Only eligible stablecoins qualify
Planned from April 2027
Individuals and companies differ
What the proposed reform would change
The government says eligible stablecoins will be treated more like money for tax purposes. The policy has three broad parts:
| Taxpayer or transaction | Announced direction |
|---|---|
| Individual or trustee disposing of an eligible stablecoin | Disposal exempt from CGT under the proposed rules |
| Individual or trustee receiving an interest-like return from lending an eligible stablecoin | Treated as savings income under the proposed rules |
| Company entering into certain eligible-stablecoin transactions | Tax treatment based on amounts recognised in company accounts |
These are policy descriptions, not a complete computation. The final law may contain eligibility, anti-avoidance, commencement and record-keeping conditions. A stablecoin disposal before the new regime starts remains subject to the current rules unless a valid transition provision says otherwise.
What is an eligible stablecoin?
The draft framework broadly links eligibility to a cryptoasset designed to maintain a stable value by reference to a particular fiat currency, with fiat currency or other assets held to support that stable value. The statutory definition and supporting conditions control the result.
Do not assume that all tokens called “stablecoins” qualify. A token can lose its eligibility, have an unusual reserve arrangement, reference something other than a fiat currency, or fail a final condition. Keep the token documentation, issuer information, acquisition dates and the status applicable on each relevant day.
Individuals: proposed CGT treatment
Under the announced policy, an individual or trustee would not have a chargeable gain or allowable loss on a disposal of an eligible stablecoin. A disposal can include selling for pounds, exchanging for another asset or spending the token; the proposed exemption would apply only if the asset and transaction meet the final rules.
This differs from the current treatment of ordinary cryptoassets, where an exchange or spending event can be a disposal. Until the new rules apply, do not use the planned stablecoin exemption in a current-year computation. Keep separate records for eligible and non-eligible tokens so that a later transition does not merge different asset classes.
| Event | Current planning question | Proposed eligible-stablecoin question |
|---|---|---|
| Sell token for GBP | Is there a current CGT disposal? | Would the final exemption apply from commencement? |
| Exchange token for another cryptoasset | Is the first token disposed of under current rules? | Is the token eligible and is the exchange covered by the final exemption? |
| Spend token | Is the token disposed of at market value? | Does the planned exemption apply to the eligible token? |
| Move between own wallets | Is there a disposal? | Still requires a transfer record and asset classification |
The proposed exemption is not a reason to stop keeping records. The status of a token, the timing of a transaction and the relationship between transactions can still matter.
Lending and interest-like returns
The policy also proposes treating certain interest-like returns from lending eligible stablecoins as savings income for individuals and trustees. This is different from the token disposal itself. A return from lending, liquidity provision, staking or another arrangement must be classified under the final rules and the actual contract.
Do not call every yield payment “interest” simply because the annual percentage is displayed like a bank rate. Keep the lending terms, token, amount, payment date, GBP value, platform and whether the return is paid in the same or another token. The current rules continue to apply until the new treatment begins.
Companies: accounts-based treatment
For companies, the published policy says the tax treatment of particular transactions involving eligible stablecoins will be based on amounts recognised in the company's accounts. That is not the same as the individual exemption. A company still needs to consider accounting recognition, Corporation Tax, trading versus investment activity, connected transactions and any final statutory adjustments.
The company treatment may therefore require a different ledger from an individual's personal CGT schedule. Keep the accounting entries, valuation policy, token eligibility evidence and transaction purpose together. Do not distribute an individual-facing “tax-free stablecoin” conclusion to a company without reviewing the company rule.
Transition and notional disposal
The draft legislation contains transition provisions, including a notional disposal mechanism for relevant assets at the start of the new regime in the circumstances set out in the draft. The existence of a draft transition clause does not mean every holder has a charge or a tax-free uplift; the exact provision, asset classification and taxpayer type must be read together.
Before April 2027, create a snapshot of holdings and cost records. Record which tokens are intended to meet the eligibility definition, which are not, and whether any lending return has already been taxed or reported. Reconcile the snapshot with exchange and wallet data, but wait for enacted legislation and final guidance before finalising a transition computation.
Stablecoins versus ordinary cryptoassets
| Question | Eligible stablecoin proposal | Other cryptoassets under current framework |
|---|---|---|
| Value reference | Must satisfy the final stablecoin definition | No stable-value requirement |
| Personal disposal | Proposed CGT exemption from April 2027 | Current CGT analysis generally continues |
| Yield or return | Certain interest-like returns proposed as savings income | Treatment depends on the activity and facts |
| Company treatment | Proposed accounts-based treatment for specified transactions | Existing company rules and accounting/tax analysis |
| Evidence | Token eligibility and commencement date are critical | Acquisition, disposal, pooling and income records remain critical |
Preparation checklist
- List all stablecoins separately from other cryptoassets.
- Record the fiat reference, issuer, reserve description and token status.
- Separate personal holdings, trustee holdings and company holdings.
- Keep current-year disposal and lending records under the current rules.
- Track the April 2027 commencement and any final transition provisions.
- Reconcile exchanges, wallets, lending platforms and bank payments.
- Use enacted legislation and final HMRC guidance before claiming the proposed exemption.
Frequently Asked Questions
Evidence and decision checks
A reliable stablecoin tax uk 2027 review starts by fixing the tax year and the date on which the relevant event happened. Record the person's or business's status, the income or transaction category, the amount before tax, tax already withheld, and any election or claim being relied on. Do not combine a headline figure with a final liability: the result can change when another income source, a payment date, an ownership interest or a qualifying condition is added.
Keep the source documents behind every important input. Depending on the subject, that may include payslips, invoices, bank statements, contracts, provider statements, travel records, HMRC notices, payroll submissions, valuations or correspondence. Where an amount is apportioned, write down the method and retain the underlying total. If a correction is made, preserve the original figure and explain the reason, date and evidence for the replacement.
Before relying on the result, check the current official guidance for the same tax year and jurisdiction. Distinguish enacted law from a consultation, draft measure, announcement or future proposal, and record the effective date. Reconcile the final estimate to the relevant return, payroll record or HMRC account. A calculator or explanatory guide can support a decision, but it cannot replace the eligibility test or the official filing and payment process.

Assumptions
- This guide describes the announced Finance Bill 2026–27 policy and draft legislation as published on 13 July 2026; it is not a statement that the reform is already current law.
- Only an eligible stablecoin within the final statutory definition will receive the proposed treatment; not every token marketed as a stablecoin will qualify.
- Company, individual, trustee, lending, staking, employment and trading facts can produce different tax outcomes and require separate analysis.
