Standard repayments are income-based and exclude the optional monthly amount. The balance chart compares minimum repayments, extra debt payments, and investing that same extra amount instead.
The first model year starts with published 2026/27 rates and 4.1% RPI. The temporary 6% cap runs from 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2027 across two forecast years; your selected RPI assumption applies after the first model year.

Compare UK income-based student-loan deductions, balance paths, remaining cancellation term, and the modelled end position if extra money is paid to debt or invested instead.
Add a postgraduate loan separately or choose postgraduate-only. The default cancellation term is a starting assumption; replace it with the remaining years shown in your SLC account. A complete shared URL takes precedence over the clean-visit sample, and its input values are visible to anyone with the link.
For 2026/27, annual repayment thresholds are £26,900 for Plan 1, £29,385 for Plan 2, £33,795 for Plan 4, £25,000 for Plan 5 and £21,000 for a Postgraduate Loan. Undergraduate plans use 9% above their threshold; Postgraduate Loans use 6%. Repayments are income-based and do not depend on the outstanding balance unless the loan is cleared. The first model year uses published 2026/27 rates and 4.1% RPI. Later Plan 1/4/5 thresholds follow the RPI assumption; Plan 2 is held at £29,385 through 2029/30 then follows RPI; Plan 5 is held at £25,000 through 2026/27 then follows RPI. Postgraduate threshold changes have no legislated future path in this model and use your salary-growth rate as an average-earnings proxy. Plan 2 assumes post-study interest treatment. Future rates/policy may change.
The monthly deduction is annual income above the threshold × plan rate ÷ 12, not a payroll table calculation. Plan assignment follows the country that funded study, not current residence: Plan 4 is used for Scotland-funded borrowing and Northern Ireland-funded postgraduate study is Plan 1. The separate 6% Postgraduate Loan in this model represents eligible England or Wales-funded postgraduate borrowing. The model excludes pay-period rounding, repayment notices, multiple simultaneous undergraduate plans, overseas repayment rules and SLC account adjustments. Plan 1/4 cancellation terms depend on cohort; enter the remaining time shown by SLC. Loan rules are not the same thing as a Scottish Income Tax calculation.
For the forecast, annual effective interest assumptions are converted to equivalent monthly rates and added to the balance monthly. Income-based deductions are spread evenly across the year as an estimate; extra repayments and investment contributions are applied at each month end. Actual interest accrual and payroll timing may differ.
The investment alternative is a nominal, pre-tax and fee-free scenario, not investment advice or a forecast. Voluntary repayments cannot be refunded. This page does not load or save the inputs through its legacy browser store; a chosen share URL is the only supported way to carry a scenario to another visit.
These GOV.UK resources support the plan thresholds, repayment rates, interest, cancellation and overseas rules described on this page. The simulator is an estimate, not an SLC account statement.
