The short answer
Pension Credit in 2026/27: Guarantee Credit, Savings Credit, eligibility and linked support such as Housing Benefit and TV licences.
Pension Credit is a means-tested benefit for people who have reached their Pension Credit qualifying age. For 2026/27 the standard minimum guarantee is £238.00 a week for a single person and £363.25 for a couple, but the amount actually used can be higher where an additional amount applies. State Pension age is rising from 66 to 67 between April 2026 and April 2028, so check your date rather than assuming everyone qualifies at 66. See how close you may be with the Pension Gap Calculator.
This guide explains the two parts of Pension Credit, what income counts, the savings rules, the passporting benefits that make claiming worthwhile, and the 2026/27 figures with worked examples.

The Two Parts of Pension Credit
| Component | What it does | 2026/27 figures |
|---|---|---|
| Guarantee Credit | Tops weekly income to the applicable minimum | £238.00 single / £363.25 couple standard amount |
| Savings Credit | Restricted extra amount for qualifying older claimants | Up to £17.96 single / £20.10 couple |
Guarantee Credit is the core element for people who have reached the relevant qualifying age and whose calculated income is below the applicable amount. A single person with £180 a week and no additions would have an illustrative £58.00 gap to the £238.00 standard amount, subject to the detailed income rules. Savings Credit is restricted to people who reached State Pension age before 6 April 2016, with a limited exception for certain couples who have remained continuously entitled.
What Income Counts
| Counts towards the test | Does not count |
|---|---|
| State Pension (old or new) | Savings of £10,000 or less |
| Private and workplace pensions | Certain disability benefits and other disregarded income |
| Earnings from work | Council Tax Reduction, Housing Benefit |
| Most benefits (carer's, bereavement) | Christmas Bonus |
The first £10,000 of savings and investments does not affect Pension Credit. Above that, every £500 (or part of £500) counts as £1 a week of income — so £15,000 of savings counts as £10 a week. This tariff income applies whether the money is actually earning interest or not. The value of the home you live in is not treated as savings, and GOV.UK lists several benefits that are not counted, but the exact treatment depends on the benefit and circumstances.
Savings Credit in Detail
Savings Credit can pay 60p for every £1 of qualifying income above the 2026/27 starting point, subject to the detailed calculation and maximum. The starting points are £208.07 for a single person and £329.75 for a couple, with maximums of £17.96 and £20.10 a week. It is only available to people who reached State Pension age before 6 April 2016, subject to the continuing-entitlement rules for certain couples.
| 2026/27 Savings Credit figure | Amount |
|---|---|
| Single starting point | £208.07 per week |
| Couple starting point | £329.75 per week |
| Maximum single award | £17.96 per week |
| Maximum couple award | £20.10 per week |
The Passporting Effect
The important reason to claim is that a Pension Credit award may help with other support. GOV.UK lists possible Housing Benefit, Council Tax Reduction and Support for Mortgage Interest, while other schemes such as Warm Home Discount have their own eligibility rules. A Pension Credit award does not automatically guarantee every listed benefit, so check each scheme and local authority separately rather than attaching a fixed cash value to the award.
Worked Examples
Example 1: The standard-amount illustration. Alan, single, receives £180 a week from a reduced State Pension and has £8,000 of savings (which does not affect the calculation). Ignoring other additions and disregards, the gap to the £238.00 standard amount is £58.00 a week. His actual award must be checked against the full Pension Credit calculation.
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| State Pension | £180.00 |
| Guarantee Credit standard amount | £238.00 |
| Illustrative gap | £58.00 |
Example 2: the saver. Hilda reached State Pension age before 6 April 2016 and has £18,000 of savings plus a private pension. The first £10,000 is ignored and the remaining £8,000 creates £16 a week of tariff income. Her Guarantee Credit and any Savings Credit depend on her complete qualifying income and the detailed calculation; the £17.96 single Savings Credit maximum is not automatically payable.
Couples, Mixed Ages and Overlapping Benefits
Couples are assessed jointly. A couple can qualify where both have reached State Pension age, or in the circumstances set out by GOV.UK where one partner is receiving Housing Benefit for people over State Pension age. Mixed-age couples can fall under different benefit rules, so do not use the couple amount without checking the household’s status. Pension Credit does not automatically stop you working, but earnings are included under the benefit calculation. A deferred State Pension can still count as income, so deferral does not create an artificial route into Pension Credit.
Working Age and Pension Credit
For anyone below State Pension age, Pension Credit is not automatic when the qualifying age is reached: a fresh claim is needed. Applications can be backdated by up to three months if the eligibility conditions were met. Disability and carer additions may increase the applicable amount, but the exact figure depends on the qualifying conditions and current rates. Some disability benefits are not counted as income, while other benefits are; check the DWP calculation rather than assuming a single disregard.
Claiming Pension Credit
Apply in four steps
- 1Check your date with the State Pension age tool — Pension Credit qualifying age is linked to State Pension age and is rising from 66 to 67 between April 2026 and April 2028.
- 2Call the Pension Credit claim line or apply online; you will need your National Insurance number and bank details.
- 3List all income and savings — the first £10,000 of savings is ignored, so do not be put off by a modest pot.
- 4Claim now even if you are unsure: awards can be backdated up to three months, and the passporting benefits start immediately.
Prepare the claim evidence
Before applying, prepare the income and capital information for both members of the household. Include State Pension letters, workplace and personal pension statements, earnings, benefits, annuity income, bank and investment balances, and housing-cost details. The claim line may ask for dates and amounts that are not visible on a current bank statement. Having the documents ready reduces the risk of an incomplete claim and makes it easier to explain a change later.
Do not exclude a small pension pot because it is not currently being withdrawn. The treatment can depend on the benefit, the income it produces and the applicable rules. Likewise, do not describe a transfer between accounts as spending or gifting capital merely because the bank balance moved. Keep a simple capital ledger showing the account, balance date and reason for any large change. Deliberately reducing capital to increase a means-tested award can have consequences, so obtain advice before giving money away or buying an asset primarily for that purpose.
Report changes after an award
Tell the Pension Service about changes to income, savings, household composition, address, rent, employment, pension withdrawals or a partner's circumstances. A new annuity, an increase in State Pension, a lump-sum withdrawal or a change in savings interest can alter the award. Keep the award notice and compare it with the updated calculation rather than assuming the original amount continues for the whole tax year.
If a partner moves in or out, or a couple separates, the assessment can change from a single-person to a couple calculation or the reverse. The effective date matters for both Pension Credit and linked benefits. Record the date, the notification made and the response. If a payment is suspended or reduced, ask for the reason and check whether the issue is missing evidence, a genuine income change or a separate benefit rule.
Pension Credit and other support are separate decisions
Pension Credit can act as a passport to help, but it is not a single universal package. Housing Benefit, Council Tax Reduction, Support for Mortgage Interest, help with health costs, Warm Home Discount and other support can use different rules, authorities and application routes. Ask the relevant local authority or scheme administrator what evidence is required. Do not assign a fixed cash value to a Pension Credit award until each linked claim has been checked.
A household that owns its home, rents, has a mortgage or lives in supported accommodation can face different housing-benefit questions. The home occupied as the main residence is treated differently from a second property or capital held elsewhere. Keep the mortgage, rent, service-charge and Council Tax documents separate from the Pension Credit income schedule so that a local authority can assess its own part of the support.
Check the award notice
When the decision arrives, check the qualifying age, household status, applicable amount, income figures, capital tariff, deductions and start date. Compare each figure with the information submitted. If an income source is missing or an amount is wrong, contact the Pension Service promptly and retain the decision notice, calculation and correspondence. A calculator can indicate that a claim may be worthwhile, but only the official decision establishes the award.
Review the award at the start of each new uprating year and after every major financial change. Save dated copies of the forecast, award notice and linked-benefit decisions. This creates a clear record if a later review asks how the household's income or capital changed.
